Annie E. Casey Foundation Joins Effort to Assist Earthquake Victims in Haiti
As the death toll continues to rise in the wake of the earthquake that flattened Haiti’s capital city of Port-au-Prince on January 12, 2010, the Annie E. Casey Foundation has adopted a three-pronged response to support the relief effort in keeping with our mission to serve vulnerable children and families.
First, the Casey Foundation will deploy up to $150,000 in grant funds to support the work of on-the-ground agencies involved in the relief effort and meeting immediate needs and well-being of children and their families.
Second, the Foundation has guaranteed a two-to-one match for the contributions of its staff to support charitable organizations that are aiding the relief effort in Haiti.
Third, the Foundation is reaching out to its broad network of community partners and grantees to ensure support for victims’ families and their kin living in the United States, including assisting with family reunification when needed.
Additionally, the Foundation is exploring opportunities for expert staff to assist on-site. Over the coming weeks and months, the Foundation will determine how best to contribute to Haiti’s long-term recovery and rebuilding, as well as how to assist in the challenge of finding permanent homes for Haitian children orphaned by the disaster.
Although the Casey Foundation focuses on improving outcomes for the most vulnerable children and families in the United States, it has responded to international disasters in the past, including the 2004 tsunami in Asia and the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan. In each instance, the Foundation funded work that targeted unmet needs of children and families, such as support for a database used to help reunite children with their families in tsunami-struck areas.
