This series of 14 publications provides practical information for understanding and implementing juvenile detention reform, based on the innovative policies and practices developed by jurisdictions participating in the Casey Foundation's Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI).

This report is book #14 in the Casey Foundation’s Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI) Pathways series on juvenile detention reform. It documents the ways in which detention reforms in general – and JDAI’s comprehensive reform model in particular -- stimulate and support a broad array of other juvenile justice system improvements.

This practice guide provides instructions on conducting a secure detention facility self-inspection as well as comprehensive detention standards and an assessment instrument.

The JDAI Help Desk
The JDAI Help Desk, operated by Pretrial Justice Institute in partnership with the Casey Foundation, is a practice-based, informational resource for advocates, practitioners, policymakers, and others interested in improving the detention component of their delinquency system. 


Documentary


These Are Our Kids: Transforming Juvenile Detention in Three American Cities
This JDAI video documents the power and effectiveness of juvenile detention reforms in Cook County (Chicago), Illinois, Multnomah County (Portland), Oregon, and Santa Cruz County, California. Each DVD includes two versions of the video, the original 32 minute documentary with extended interviews and information; and a 13 minute condensed version covering JDAI's primary points for use in presentations and conferences.



Feature Story


Sustained and Deliberate Focus on Girls Realizes Impressive Results
Following an intentional process to address the inappropriate detention of girls, Washoe County (Reno), Nevada has instituted changes in admissions policies and implemented a host of gender-responsive practices that have contributed to a significant reduction in the number of girls entering detention.
