Washington State Gets New JDAI Site
Mason County (Shelton), a relatively small jurisdiction with a population of 49,405 and a 16-bed detention center, became the sixth JDAI site in Washington State.
The initial stakeholders meeting brought together Shelton’s mayor and Mason County’s commissioners, judges and law enforcement and school officials.
The team wants to use JDAI strategies to improve the county’s juvenile justice system and to explore using similar measures to reduce overcrowding in its adult jail. The team also discussed building an array of alternatives to detention in Mason County.
“I am pleased to announce that we have a new JDAI site in Washington State,” said Rand Young, Washington’s state JDAI coordinator. “The juvenile court administrator, the probation department and detention manager, and the juvenile court staff are all very excited about JDAI and anxious to begin the process.”
