Carrera also served as the executive director of the Nevada Empowered Women's Project and led advocacy efforts for low-income women and children. She is a member of the Alliance of Latinas in Teen Action and Solidarity, the Mariposa Academy of Language and Learning, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada.
