Indianapolis Facility Hosts Community Fair and Backpack Giveaway
Hundreds of families flocked to the Marion County (Indianapolis), Ind., detention center to attend an outdoor CommUNITY Fair organized by Superintendent DeShane Reed.
“We wanted to demonstrate to the neighboring community that positive things could happen here,” DeShane said.
JDAI practitioners and youth who once lived in the facility volunteered at the event, designed to be fun and community friendly. Adjacent streets took on a carnival-like atmosphere, with games, jugglers, inflatable playgrounds, a climbing wall, food and music.
The center distributed 4,500 free backpacks and school supplies to neighborhood families. More than 60 community organizations participated in the event.
