Washoe County Receives Stimulus Funds to Employ Youth

About 60 youth from the JDAI site in Washoe County (Reno), Nevada, will be employed this summer through programs funded by the federal stimulus package.

"This is a great opportunity for our youth to learn a valuable skill and keep them involved in productive educational activities for five long months," said Mike Pomi, county juvenile services director.

"Our community will benefit as well, due to budget cuts at our park and recreation agency," he added.

Local nonprofits will hire youth referred by schools and the juvenile justice agency to work in county parks, nursing homes and painting and landscaping businesses. About half the youth will learn computer skills at the Boys & Girls Club, and then help teach computer classes in youth arts programs. Youth will be paid $8 an hour, receive a bus pass and earn a $100 bonus when they complete the program.
