Pennsylvania Newspapers Recognize Good Works of Juvenile Law Center
Two Pennsylvania newspapers celebrated the dogged determination of the Juvenile Law Center in its efforts to obtain justice for the youth of Luzerne County. As a direct result of intervention by the Philadelphia-based Center, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court vacated over 6,500 delinquency adjudications and cleared juveniles’ records.
The Harrisburg Patriot News named the Juvenile Law Center the "Best of 2009" and the Philadelphia Inquirer named staff Deputy Director Marsha Levick and Associate Director Lourdes Rosado its "Citizens of the Year."
The Inquirer also lauded the Center, paying tribute to its 2009 Citizens of the Year in a January 3, 2010, editorial: “In addition to freeing some children ... from detention, their work resulted in an unprecedented state Supreme Court order in October expunging the records of 6,500 juveniles who had been convicted over a five-year period. The court cited a ‘travesty of justice.’ ... For their work in exposing this miscarriage of justice, the Editorial Board has selected Marsha Levick and Lourdes Rosado of the Juvenile Law Center as The Inquirer’s 2009 Citizens of the Year."
