New Web Tool Documents Racial and Ethnic Disparities By State

The W. Haywood Burns Institute has published an interactive map on its website that captures racial and ethnic disparities in juvenile justice by state and by county. The new resource includes one-day count incarceration data, annual data by decision-making points in the juvenile justice system and a host of other information.

"We believe that a data-driven approach is essential to address systemic bias and racism,” said James Bell, executive director of the Burns Institute. "In our work we notice that when people are informed by the data, they begin to understand the extent of the disparities in their jurisdiction, and then they become willing to change their behavior. On the local level information is key."

The Burns Institute is a San Francisco-based national nonprofit. Its mission is to protect and improve the lives of youth of color and poor youth and to ensure fairness and equity throughout the juvenile justice system.
