Expertise:
Carolyn D. Hayden Carolyn D. Hayden has a diverse professional background that includes over twenty years in the non-profit and for-profit sectors. Carolyn is president of The Hayden Group, an organization specializing in developing and implementing innovative approaches in the fields of asset-building and organizational development for foundations and non-profit organizations. Prior to forming The Hayden Group, Carolyn was Vice-President of the National Economic Development and Law Center (NEDLC), a non-profit legal services and planning organization dedicated to improving economic security for low-income communities. Carolyn managed the internal operations and led national initiatives in the fields of asset building and community strengthening.
Ms. Hayden was a fellow in the Annie E. Casey Foundation's Children and Family Fellowship prior to her position at NEDLC. The focus of her fellowship was the study and implementation of effective public-private partnerships to benefit low-income communities. During the year-long leadership development program, she worked on-site to assist a major telecommunication company to formulate a plan to increase the involvement of a broader number of national and local stakeholders in addressing community concerns; studied a Governor’s efforts to increase public investment in faith-based community economic development; and worked with a national nonprofit organization to encourage their national network to implement effective community economic development strategies.
Carolyn served as the Director of Economic Development Programs with the Congress of National Black Churches (CNBC) for eight years, where she created CNBC’s first for-profit, wholly owned social enterprise organization designed to provide property and casualty insurance services to faith-based organizations nationwide. She developed a national homeownership program that led CNBC to become a HUD national intermediary and a Fannie Mae partner. Her professional career in the for-profit sector began when she became co-owner of a company that provided marketing and service support to thousands of American Express business and retail establishments in four Mid-western states.
In addition, Carolyn was selected for Ford Motor Company’s National Minority Dealer Training Program and owned a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury automobile dealership in Texas. Carolyn has authored a number of publications, including a case study and guide to assist organizations desiring to start car ownership programs, and a case study of faith-based organizations and their efforts to support family economic success. Carolyn is currently a member of the MCI Minority Consumer Advisory Council and works with a number of foundations to help further their economic development and asset-building initiatives.
