KIDS COUNT News — February 2013
While the United States still leads the world in locking up its young people, a new KIDS COUNT data snapshot shows the nation's confinement rate is the lowest it has been in 35 years.

KIDS COUNT News — January 2013
This issue features new data involving children in immigrant families in the United States. Data show that the majority of these children are legal citizens and that an increasing number of them are living in poverty.

This issue focuses on the new KIDS COUNT Policy Report on youth, work and opportunity. According to the report, in the United States, 6.5 million 16- to 24-year-olds are jobless and out of school. Known as disconnected youth, these young people encounter many obstacles to long-term success.

Wait times for adoptions from foster care shorten, according to new data available. In addition, the adoption of children from foster care by relatives is on the rise.

Every year, the Annie E. Casey Foundation produces the KIDS COUNT Data Book to illuminate the status of America’s children. By updating the assessment annually, KIDS COUNT provides ongoing benchmarks that can be used to see how the nation and states have advanced or regressed over time on issues concerning our children.

The KIDS COUNT Data Center has been updated to include additional indicators related to early reading from the National Center of Education Statistics, the U.S. Census Bureau, and the National Survey of Children’s Health.
