Grant Information

The Annie E. Casey Foundation is committed to building a brighter future for children who face significant obstacles on the road to adulthood. To help kids, we must invest in the parents who raise them and the neighborhoods where they live.

Our work focuses on ensuring kids have strong, supportive families; increasing economic opportunity; transforming struggling communities; and strengthening social sector leaders dedicated to improving the lives of young people. To those ends, we invest in innovative ideas, practices and policies that have the potential to help millions thrive. Our grant making is therefore very selective.

What type of activities do you fund?

Central to the Foundation’s work is a focus on knowing what works and using data to drive decision making. We fund a wide range of activities in that vein:

  • Community and resident engagement
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Demonstration projects for new approaches and practices
  • Evidence-based programs and practices
  • Policy advocacy and analysis
  • Research and evaluation
  • Technical assistance
  • Youth engagement and leadership

Programs are only one part of the solution. That’s why Casey also invests in the effectiveness of nonprofit and government leaders, organizations and networks, building their capacity to achieve results for children and families. In particular, we fund strategies that support the following:

  • Leadership development
  • Racial and ethnic equity and inclusion

What organizations receive Casey Foundation grants?

In 2021, we funded 737 organizations. We share information about Casey Foundation grants and grantees online through a partnership with the Foundation Center.

When you visit the site, note that our grants to national organizations will only be reflected in the state where an organization is headquartered. Our investments in these organizations, however, are at work in states across the country.

The Casey Foundation only funds organizations in the United States.

What type of organizations do you fund?

The majority of our funding goes to tax-exempt organizations (nonprofits, public charities and universities) and public agencies in the United States identified by staff members.

In addition to funding, we share our expertise directly with nonprofit leaders, advocates, policymakers and government officials to support improved practices and policies for children and families.

Many Casey Foundation grantees are part of our KIDS COUNT® (LA INFANCIA CUENTA™) network, which provides legislators, public officials and child advocates with reliable data, policy recommendations and tools to advance policies that benefit children.

How many grants do you provide?

In 2021, the Foundation awarded 1,048 grants to 737 organizations.

What is the average grant size?

In 2021, the average grant from the Casey Foundation was $85,712.

In total, we awarded $89 million to projects and activities that support children, youth, families and communities in 2021.

Do you provide grants to individuals or families?

The Foundation is unable to make grants or donations directly to individuals.

To find help securing food, housing, employment, health care, counseling and more, visit the United Way of America’s 2-1-1 website.

What don’t you fund?

The Foundation is unable to make grants or donations directly to individuals.

We specifically do not fund projects outside the United States, lobbying and political campaigning.

What are your current opportunities for grant seekers?

There are no available funding opportunities at this time.

Do you fund organizations and projects outside the United States?

No. The Foundation focuses on investments in the United States.

Do you accept unsolicited proposals?

No. The Foundation does not accept or review unsolicited proposals.

For the vast majority of grants, our staff will approach an organization directly and invite them to submit a proposal. Infrequently, we may solicit applications for a targeted project through an open call for proposals.

Do I have to be on a list to be invited to apply for a grant?

No. The Foundation does not maintain a list of potential grantees.

For the vast majority of grants, our staff will approach an organization directly and invite them to submit a proposal.

May I join or register for your grantee portal?

Registration for the Foundation’s grantee portal is only for current grantees and is used to facilitate our grant-making and reporting process. We do not use the portal to list potential funding opportunities or develop a group of potential grantees.

How do I access the Foundation’s Grantee and Consultant Portal?

The Casey Foundation’s Grantee and Consultant Portal is only for current grantees.

What resources are available for grant seekers?

The Casey Foundation does not accept, review or fund unsolicited grant proposals. Given our funds are limited, we restrict our grants to organizations identified by staff.

However, a number of resources are available to help nonprofits and community leaders find grant opportunities with other funders and charities. Visit the following to learn more:
