Staff and volunteers from The Center for Working Families Inc. prepared 1,054 tax returns this spring. This effort brought more than $1.5 million in tax refunds and credits into the community, including more than $800,000 in earned income tax credits (EITC) to 410 filers. A family with an annual income of $20,000 can receive as much as $5,000 through the federal EITC, making it the most effective existing government tool for lifting children out of poverty, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. The center prepared the highest volume of returns amongst the 40 sites in the metro-wide Atlanta Prosperity Campaign this year.
