Juve­nile pro­ba­tion lead­ers have like­ly heard guid­ance that they should engage and sup­port staff as key actors in pro­ba­tion trans­for­ma­tion. But what does engage and sup­port staff” mean in this con­text? What dif­fer­ence would it make?

Inten­tion­al­ly Engag­ing Staff to Trans­form Juve­nile Pro­ba­tion — an upcom­ing webi­nar host­ed by the Annie E. Casey Foun­da­tion — will fea­ture Mary­land Depart­ment of Juve­nile Ser­vices staff. They will dis­cuss their expe­ri­ences engag­ing col­leagues on the com­mu­ni­ty ser­vices team in process­es, poli­cies and deci­sion mak­ing affect­ing pro­ba­tion and after­care. They will share their jour­ney, stum­bles and accom­plish­ments from three points of view: front­line staff, region­al lead­er­ship and senior leadership.

This ses­sion is for any juris­dic­tion inter­est­ed in begin­ning or improv­ing their staff engage­ment efforts, par­tic­u­lar­ly in pro­ba­tion depart­ments. It explores one of the core ele­ments of an effec­tive youth jus­tice sys­tem and offers an entry point to Ten Ways to Trans­form Youth Jus­tice, a prac­ti­cal roadmap for local systems. 

Par­tic­i­pants will learn how to:

  • lev­el set and iden­ti­fy pri­or­i­ties for orga­ni­za­tion­al cul­ture change using the free Juve­nile Pro­ba­tion Prac­tice Sur­vey to gath­er qual­i­ta­tive infor­ma­tion from their own pro­ba­tion offi­cers, super­vi­sors and leadership; 
  • include staff who are respon­si­ble for active case­loads in plan­ning for new or revised policies;
  • pri­or­i­tize com­mu­ni­ca­tion between staff and man­age­ment and offer mech­a­nisms to sup­port it, such as team meet­ings; and
  • encour­age staff to share ideas, iden­ti­fy issues and hold lead­ers account­able for solutions.
